Decades ago, my high school friend Ricky had around a dozen of parrots in one large cage, all colors, shapes, and sizes. It was like a paint factory explosion. Ricky had given them all names and had begun collecting all the parrot literature he could find. I began reading these books and was completely enthralled by what I learned.

There are two parrot families: the cacatuidae (cockatoos) and the Psittacidae (real parrots). It turns out that there are precisely 353 bird species that fit under these two categories. They all have a curve-shaped beak, restricted movement in the upper jaw, and an upright attitude. Did you know that every parrot has four toes on each foot, two in front and two in the back?

A parrot may be found almost everywhere that is warm. These countries include India, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. The Carolina parakeet was another parrot breed that was exclusively found in the United States but is now extinct. According to research, Australasia, South America, and Central America have the most parrot species.

Conures, macaws, Amazons, cockatoos, African Greys, lovebirds, Cockatiels, Budgerigars, and parakeets are popular pet parrots because they are brightly colored and come in a variety of color combinations. Pet parrots’ wings are occasionally clipped to keep them grounded. Some people want to keep their parrots in the air. There are parrots that may live up to 80 years, including cockatoos, Amazon parrots, African Grey Parrots, and bigger macaws.

And that is how my journey with ParrotProject.org got started…
